Who: Jack Thorne (writer); Dafne Keene, Lin-Manuel Miranda, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson

What: An adaptation of Philip Pullman's classic book series, which takes place in an alt-version of our world where people have daemons (physical representations of a person's soul). The story follows Lyra, an orphan raised in Oxford by scholars, who gets swept away on an adventure that opens the door to a much bigger world. The first season will cover Northern Lights, the first book in Pullman's trilogy.

Why: His Dark Materials deserves to be a screen success, and it has all the makings of one too. They make have f**ked up the movie version, but with BBC and HBO working on this, there's hope Pullman's epic fantasy will be done justice. The series has everything you could want from a fantasy story, from brilliant characters, shocking twists and turns, magic, a fun adventure that isn't afraid to get dark, a critique of organised religion, and armoured polar bears.
