Nic Pizzolatto really doesn't like e-cigarettes if Season 2 is any indication. In the second episode, Ray sees Ani smoking an e-cig and says, "I tried one once, it felt like I was smoking me. A real cigarette wouldn't make you feel like that. Or maybe it's just a little too close to suckin' a robot's dick, I don't know", while Ani looks hilariously puzzled. In the next episode, Paul is riding with Ani when she takes a puff, and he says, "Is that a f***ing e-cigarette?" Perhaps Pizzolatto is commenting on masculinity, what with Ray's aversion to sucking on the phallic object and Paul's repressed homosexuality. On the other had, as Freud would say if he were alive today, "Sometimes an e-cig is just an e-cig."
