One of the big "shocks" early on in Season 2 occurs when Ray goes to investigate a property used by Caspere, which contains a number of sex objects and a video camera. He's then surprised by someone wearing a crow outfit, who blasts him twice with a shotgun, seemingly killing him as episode two comes to an end. Ray is revealed to have survived in the next episode because the shooter used beanbag shells, but this may have been more surprising had trailers aired before the season not made it clear that Colin Farrell would be appearing in other scenes. The fake-out sadly didn't work as well as they hoped because HBO didn't think their marketing strategy through properly. Ray may have survived, but he did have to face the embarrassment of peeing his pants from the trauma.
