One of the big complaints about this season has been the introduction of too many conventional "life is hell for cops" subplots, one of the laziest of which is the initial implication that Ani is a gambling addict, as evidenced by her being kicked out of a casino at the end of the first episode. When she's having a meeting with her boss about the sexual harassment complaint filed by Mercer, it's also noted that she has gambling debts. After this, the storyline is pretty much dropped completely, and given how little importance it had in the plot and the meager amount of development it lent the character, it's hard not to wonder: what was the point? It seems like something that should've been cut in the drafting process, but instead it sticks out like a sore thumb, especially on a repeat viewing.
