The other stand out episode of Series 8 was this chiller that aimed to explain just what lives under the bed, and it's one of the most surprising of all Doctor Who episodes in many ways. The story changes track multiple times, delivering some of the series' spookiest scenes in the process (that bedroom scene is a masterclass in economical horror), before hitting us with an almighty whopper. Can that really be the Doctor as a child? And in the end, it all comes together as a very atmospheric and engaging mediation on the nature of fear. While it's still too early to say, Listen will likely go on to become a modern classic.
