In The Walking Dead, writer/director Frank Darabont decided to go dark introducing audiences to the new world, by having confused deputy Rick Grimes wandering through a gas station and showing concern for a little undead girl he instinctively shoots in the head.
As far as the zombie drama goes, it doesn't really get more iconic than this, opening things with a brutal image of innocence lost that is as shocking as it is a brilliant narrative hook.
