30 Greatest TV Sitcoms Of All Time
11. Cheers
Aside from having one of TV's most recognisable theme songs, Cheers is the perfect example of how simple successful sitcoms can be; as long as the characters are there and the humour is consistent, any situation can be made into a compelling piece of television.
Cheers is set in a bar, after which the show is named, and follows a group of people who frequently meet up to drink, socialise and vent. This formula kept the show running for 275 episodes over eleven seasons, between 1982 to 1993.
The show took place almost entirely in the front room of the bar, and touched on major themes throughout its run - from alcoholism, sexuality, feminism, adultery and relationships. The shifting dynamic between the regulars is the focus of the show, with every episode following their various hurdles in life.
Its influence was so strong during its run that it birthed a number of successful spin-offs, including The Tortellis and Frasier.
