This was the moment where the show changed for a lot of people. Prior to this, it genuinely felt like anyone could or would be killed in the show. In fact, we'd just spent a number of episodes following Eren and suddenly he was the Beard Titan's snack. In fact, it looked like Mikasa was going to suffer a similar fate too.
That was until a strange acting titan arrived and started going to town on the other titans around it. So far in the show, we'd only seen titans killing humans, so to see a titan actively and brutally attempt to kill another was completely mind-blowing at this point in the show.
Eagle-eyed viewers will have quickly realised that it was actually Eren in a titan form from early on. However, the sheer shock of this titan emerging and violently destroying other titans around it was enough to delay the realisation for most people watching the show.
