This is kind of the case in this particular moment, as he asks Eren - in his titan form - to pretend to be concussed, before using himself as a decoy against the Colossal Titan. As its steam practically burns Armin alive, Eren manages to come from behind Bertholdt and slice him out of his nape.

It's an important moment for Armin's character as he goes from being someone that could only be relied upon for his smarts, but would buckle when times get tough, to someone who was clearly willing to die to save his friends.
