'Preacher' Season 3: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Sonsabitches'

1. Plot Conveniences

Although Preacher likes to make fun of itself on occasion, it should still retain a level of believability when it comes to the narrative. Sonsabitches was fun, but it suffered from the odd plot convenience here and there. For example, Jesse's complicated plan was far from well-structured, and yet Herr Starr just happened to turn up at the exact moment Jesse had hoped he would. Moreover, they sit in Marie L'Angelle's kitchen to openly discuss Jesse's plan to escape, and L'Angelle just happens to stay away for the duration of the conversation - despite the fact that the version we see of her in the flashbacks knows everything about what goes on in her home.

Similarly, Tulip randomly turning up with the gun to shoot Her Starr's associates just as Jesse was about to get his soul back was a little like a reverse deus ex machina moment, and served no real purpose - other than to drag this plot out for several more episodes.
