43 New And Upcoming Comic-Book TV Shows: Which Will Triumph?

22. Vixen

Pitch: Mari McCabe struggles to figure out the secret of her mother's enchanted necklace, which we get to find out in the first 45 seconds of the first episode: it gives her the powers of various animals. Also, she fights the Arrow and the Flash a lot, more or less because they're the man. Latest News: This series started and ended on The CW Seed in the last two months. Never heard of the CW Seed? You're not alone. Odds Of Success: Hard to gauge. The series got good reviews and completed its simple story arc without trouble. But its entire "season" amounted to less than an hour on an online platform that barely allowed viral marketing and greeted visitors with taglines like "Laughable" and "Make sure you clear your browser history," a cheeky self-deprecation that served the CW's comedies better than straight action-adventure. Vixen seemed almost set up to fail. Without any way to gather specific traffic details or even share numbers for the series, the only way we'll know if it succeeded or not is if there's a Season 2 or, perhaps, a lot more shows in that mode.

21. Marvel's Most Wanted

Pitch: The later additions to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Bobbi "Mockingbird" Chase and Lance Hunter, get their own mission, where they'll probably do some banter. Latest News: News of this series has been on and off. This month, it seems to be on. Exec producer Jeffrey Bell and writer Paul Zbyszewski, already working on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., are pushing it forward. Odds Of Success: Mmmmaybe. It does seem early to spin off Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most popular characters, though it's certainly got better odds at this point than spinning off Ward and Coulson. Doing another miniseries like a season of Agent Carter could work.

20. Static Shock

Pitch: The well-remembered cartoon based on the comics is more likely to be used than the comics themselves, which had a continuity interlocked with other Milestone Comics series. In the cartoon, high school student Virgil Hawkins is one of a number of locals mutated by an event known as The Big Bang (not unlike the plot eventually used in The Flash). He uses his electric super-powers to fight criminals, mutated and otherwise, along with his super-mechanic best friend Gear. Latest News: Warner Brothers is developing a live-action Web series. Jaden Smith is all but confirmed as the star. Production is expected to begin in 2016. Odds Of Success: Reasonable. There's an audience that remembers the Static Shock cartoon, but it's not so recent that they haven't had time to miss it. Jaden Smith's behavior has sometimes been erratic, however, and this show will need his A-game.

19. The Woods

Pitch: A preparatory high school vanishes from Earth and reappears on an alien planet... with 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 staffers inside it. With no way home and no idea how they got there, they have to carve out a new life in a hostile, unpredictable environment. Latest News: Universal TV picked up the TV rights, announced just as this article went to press. Odds Of Success: Good. The Woods was Boom's most popular comic in 2014 and the series has taken plenty of the right kind of creative chances. Boom's reputation for kid-friendly fare made it an unlikely choice to publish a gripping thriller, and yet here we are.
