43 New And Upcoming Comic-Book TV Shows: Which Will Triumph?
26. Jacked
Pitch: Josh Jaffe, a neurotic family man, buys a "smart pill" to increase his focus. He finds it also gives him incredible strength and power, the ability to fulfill his childhood dreams. But that thrill is addictive for a man on the edge of a mid-life crisis. Latest News: This series is in development for USA Network from DC Entertainment for a 2016 release. Odds Of Success: Fair. Supernatural creator Eric Kripke has a more personal spin on this story than it sounded like when the series was first announced under the title Amped, though it still seems hasty to start producing the TV series without more testing of the concept through the comic. That comic is set for a November release and the TV series for release in 2016.
25. Disciples
Pitch: One percenters now rule the solar system, colonizing its many moons. Billionaire industrialist McCauley Richmond has built a new society on Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter, where his flock of cultists are free to worship him. Bounty hunters Dagmar, Rick and Jules are there to retrieve a senator's daughter who has joined the cult. But something has gone wrong. Latest News: This series is still in development by Universal Cable Productions even after losing its original producer, Wes Craven. Odds Of Success: Fairly good. The TV deal was announced before the first issue even came out, which is a point against it, but it's got a strong concept and that scene of corpses floating in orbit around Jupiter above is certainly Cravenesque. The loss of Craven might even help this project by raising audiences' morbid curiosity, but only if producers work fast.
24. Southern Bastards
Pitch: Earl Tubb, the son of a sheriff, finds his Alabama hometown is now in the grip of the unsubtly named Euless Boss, head coach of a high school football team with a few side interests. Latest News: Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, creators of the deep-fried crime drama, will serve FX as executive producers of the TV series as of July. Odds Of Success: All right. Southern Bastards has some themes in common with Scalped, the series that put Jason Aaron on the map, especially the return of a prodigal son to a town that seems lost without him. It's hard to be sure how recent events in the South will affect viewers' interest in a story about crime and corruption set in Alabama. That could be good news or bad news for it.
23. Sex Criminals
Latest News: This series is in development by Universal TV. Last update in February. Pitch: A female librarian and male actor can freeze time when they orgasm. Each thought they were the only one who could do so, but now they've found each other and they're planning a bank robbery. Odds Of Success: So-so. Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's story is funny, original, a natural fit for TV, and killing it in the reviews. Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick, a power couple in comics scriptwriting, are producing. The main challenge will be finding a mainstream venue that lets it be as explicit as it needs to be. It's been quiet long enough for its situation to be a little dubious.
T Campbell has written quite a few online comics series and selected work for Marvel, Archie and Tokyopop. His longest-running works are Fans, Penny and Aggie-- and his current project with co-writer Phil Kahn, Guilded Age.
