5 Best & 5 Worst US TV Remakes

2. Queer as Folk In today€™s world of HBO and Showtime - where gratuitous sex and violence are routinely expected to avoid disappointment - it€™s bizarre to think that so many people were offended by the Channel 4 drama Queer as Folk. First shown in 1999, the drama depicts the lives of a group of gay men living in Manchester and was the subject of mass controversy over its graphic sexual content and up-front depiction of modern homosexuality. Although it managed to offend a few people who hadn€™t managed to find the off switch on their remotes, Queer as Folk was a ground-breaking success which also launched the careers of Aiden Gillen (The Wire, Game of Thrones) and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy). After causing such a stir in the UK, Showtime immediately took an interest in the show and remade it a mere year afterwards in 2000, moving the action to Pittsburgh. While the first two seasons stuck closely to the UK version, Queer as Folk USA ran for a further three seasons, exploring new areas and breaking new ground for the depiction of homosexuality on US TV. Just like its UK counterpart, Queer as Folk USA remains a landmark moment in TV history.
