5 Game Of Thrones Characters You’ll Like Much Better On A Rewatch (And 1 You’ll Like Less)
4. The High Sparrow
On the first watch, you’re always trying to get to the bottom of his motives. What game is he playing? By taking down both Margaery and Cersei, who does he serve? While the audience always had some inkling on the likes of Varys and Baelish, not so the High Sparrow. Because of this, everyone was slightly on edge whenever he appeared, waiting for a crack to appear in his facade.
The second time around, you realise he’s been telling you all along. The same way Varys never strays from serving the realm in his own ways, the High Sparrow serves only the gods. There is no game being played when he offers Jaime opportunity to kill him at Myrcella’s funeral; he will die gladly, if that is what the gods wish.
Having said that, he’s not a good guy. Not at all. He alone decides who the gods feel needs to atone, with authoritarian and brutal methods. He’s a religious fanatic, and a master manipulator, but he at least uses his manipulation for his own version of good rather than personal gain or riches.
