4. Sons Of Anarchy Is Loosely Based Around Shakespeares, Hamlet
Sons Of Anarchy is about the struggle between family, their dynamics and the sacrifices they make to get by and survive as whole. The series is an emotional rollercoaster with some family members organising the murder of others in one episode and enjoying a family meal together the next. This sort of intensity obviously does not depict the average family dynamic but the idea in general does, every family unit has problems and no human being is perfect. William Shakespeares Hamlet is a tragedy about a young Prince set on revenge for the murder of his father. Ring any bells? This theme is also the undercurrent in Sons Of Anarchy, with Jaxs angst towards Clay for the murder of his own father. Jaxs father was murdered by someone he should have been able to trust and he was let down by his wife who conspired against him for her own needs. Alike Hamlet, the ghost of Jaxs father haunts him from beyond the grave. The ghost of John Teller speaks to Jax through old journals written for him while he was still a child, with the intent to be read upon reaching adulthood. This need to avenge his father drives Jax throughout the series and affects every step he takes. The tragedy and corruption in Sons Of Anarchy directly reflects the story of Hamlet in such an effortless and seamless way that you would have no idea the connection is there but when realised, its presence is hard to shake and you could discuss comparisons for days.
