2. TV Has Moved On
I touched upon this point in the last section, which is the reality that ten years have passed since the show finished. Pop culture, television and society in general has moved on. The sitcom is not as popular a genre as it was in the 90s, and most of the great sitcoms from the
Friends era
(Seinfield, Fraiser,Will & Grace) have long since gone. Sure we still have the likes of
Two and a Half Men,
The Big Bang Theory and
How I Met Your Mother, but theyre hardly the talking points there predecessors were. To be brutally honest, when watching these shows, I feel like Ive seen it all before. They can come across as cut-price versions of the originals. Bad remakes!
Friends was an original of its time and missing an episode was inconceivable. However, Im not sure bringing it back in the 2010s would necessarily guarantee success. Of course, it would be watched widely, due to pure fan nostalgia, but creatively I believe television has become a lot more scrutinised in recent years. TV series seem to have become considerable more stylised, creative and also, multi-genre. As such, the focus of popularity seems to have passed over sitcoms and landed on high-concept drama, fantasy series an reality shows for the time being. It would be heartbreaking for fans if their beloved series was brought back, only for it to fall into insignificance.
