2. Dexters Killer Secret Isnt That Big of a Secret Anymore
The whole premise of Dexter was that he was trying to live two different lives: one as a serial killer, and one as a law-abiding citizen who works for Miami Metro. This entire premise is based solely around the idea that Dexter keeps his serial killer identity a secret. If Dexter starts sharing his secret with people, then the stakes are lowered considerably, especially if the people he told the secret too are fine with it. There was no more groan-worthy moment than after the season six cliffhanger when Deb finally catches Dexter in the act of killing someone. The show could have gone is so many different directions after this pivotal moment in the series, after all, this was one of Dexters biggest fears throughout the entire series. Would Deb kill him? Turn him in? Any of those options are realistic, plausible, and would lead to some great television. That didnt happen. Instead, Deb just kind of came to terms with her brother being a serial killer. Essentially, after six years of build up, our payoff was Well, youre my brother, we can work this out. Come live with me. You dont work out a sibling being a murderer like you work out someone eating the last Hot Pocket. This is some serious business that you should probably put some thought into how to handle it. There was some tension built around the situation, but Deb essentially gave him a pass from episode one of the season, so you really werent worried about it. One of my favorite moments in the entire series was when Dexter and Doakes were in the cabin. Dexter could finally be honest with someone about who he really was, a luxury he was normally only afforded before he killed the person on his table. The dialogue exchanged between the two was phenomenal. You could tell Dexter was really getting a weight lifted off of his shoulders. Now, he can just talk to Deb about it or Hannah McKay or Lumen or the drug dealer who killed his mom who seemingly got away towards the end of the season but didnt go to the police. Its only a matter of time before Quinn, Harrison, Astor, Cody, Batista, the taco truck worker and the rest of Miami probably gets to know the secret and they will all magically be fine with it. I guess Miguel Prado doesnt feel so special now, knowing that Dexter has told more than just him his secret.
