3. All Our Inner Geeks Are Coming Out
Cast your mind back ten years ago. How many superhero movies had been made and how many of them had been successful? Sure, you had the Spider-Man and X-Men franchises blossoming
, but there was also a string of terrible comic book movie releases from
Tank Girl to
Batman & Robin, and a dozen other movies that bombed. However since the early success of those Marvel property films and then Warner Bros/DC getting in on the act with Batman Begins, theyve been swamping the market with four or five of them every summer, most recently The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Iron Man 3 becoming three films among an elite of the biggest blockbusters of all time. And you can see this trend on TV too. Do you think shows like
Heroes and
Smallville wouldve done so well in 1990s? The novels that
Game of Thrones is based on were published then. Was anyone begging for a TV adaptation? The field of what is considered acceptable television material has changed very quickly, with a lot of credit due to the movie industry for allowing what used to be nerd genres to become mainstream. Shows on television are more and more resembling books and genres that werent previously celebrated and that is a great thing. It lets people try new things they never wouldve before and creates whole new markets. So many opportunities are presented to learn from people of every point of view, nationality, culture and idea because of the mainstream acceptance of comics, anime, manga, fantasy, and everything else under the sun. We've come a long way.
