2. The Audience Has More Power Over Selection
This is more true now that ever before and you wouldnt believe what a big difference that it has made. I cant think about how many terrible sitcoms that I used to sit through when I was younger that all essentially had the exact same plot.
The Cosby Show, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Home Improvement, all of them were basically the same. Thats not to say that these types of shows dont still exist, because they do. If that if your craving, then it will be fulfilled, in mass quantity. But unlike before, theyre not rewarded for that. Nowadays, the shows that make it pass their pilot, that become ultra successful, become that way because
we want them to, not some studio head. The Netflix Original
House of Cards wouldve never been successful in a pre-internet era where the opinion of the public is so easy to express and find out. Shows like
Mad Men and
Downtown Abbey wouldve never built such a cult following. Because of the fact that we have all the knowledge in the world a finger click away, we can also express our dislike and like of things just as quickly. And when studios and production companies experience the backlash the internet can only produce, they learn what the public sees and what they want to see. For the first time, shows and movies are being made because we asked for them and that it a good thing.
