2. The Mysteries
Of course in a few years time when we still dont have any answers this might not be such a positive but currently they are what keep you watching. The wonderful thing is that the dead dont know why they have returned nor do they living. The only character who might have any clue to what is happening is barmaid Lucy the town psychic who can only see during intercourse. Each episode gives away enough to keep you intrigued but you dont feel like youve been hand fed the answers. There are some nice explanations given via librarian Adele who explains the dams previous flood to school children and the wise Mme Costa explains the towns history to an over curious Camille. Water and the dam connects all of this is some way, with a village slowly appearing from beneath the water as a collect of newly dead animals wash up ashore of the slowly drowning town. They are some indicators that this isn't the first time The Returned have appeared, Costas elderly husband says not again when his younger deceased spouse reappears and the church priest has ambiguous feelings that this is not so unusual. Victor and other deceased characters pop up throughout flashbacks that slowly reveal more about these characters and the incident that led to their death. Visions and appirations start mind bending the audience as you're not sure if they are caused by The Returned or echoes from the disturbed mind of the inhabitants. These mysteries bring up biblical points about purgatory and the rapture very similar to Lost, lets just hope they are resolved in a less haphazard way. If they arent resolved at least we enjoyed the ride.
