5 Things A Sixth Season Of The Wire Could've Focused On

1. Gentrification

Perhaps a subject that is more pertinent now than it was when the series ended in 2008, gentrification has similar numbers of supporters and detractors, many of which take an extreme stance on the issue. For the unaware, it involves the redevelopment of 'run-down' and crime-ridden neighbourhoods into more appealing locales, though this often has the unwanted side effect of driving up property prices and the cost of living, subsequently pricing out the original inhabitants and forcing them to move elsewhere.

Naturally, most politicians are in favour of sprucing up their constituencies and are often in bed with the businesspeople that profit from such moves. It wouldn't have been too difficult to depict efforts it to regenerate some of Baltimore's decrepit neighbourhoods, of which there are many, particularly given that the show's political players were well established, as was corrupt property developer Andy Crawczyk.

The series' law enforcement characters, meanwhile, could also have been incorporated into such a storyline, as many would be the potential victims of gentrification given their working class roots and less than substantial pay packets. This could've led to some interesting conversations and collaborations with their criminal counterparts as they try and maintain the status quo on their streets, though entrepreneurial individuals such as Idris Elba's Stringer Bell (had such a plot been featured before his demise) would probably have been trying to profit from any developments on the side.
