5 TV Couples That Elevated Shows (And 5 That Ruined It)

2. Lorelai & Christopher - Gilmore Girls

Throughout Gilmore Girls' initial run, the writers told the story of how Lorelai, a young woman with rich parents who ended up running away from home after she got pregnant at 16, raised her daughter Rory alone and ended up giving her everything she could have wanted during her young life in Stars Hollow. However, it also alluded towards that woman finding love so that she could finally do the one thing she hadn't yet done - get married.

Fans of the show watched for years, as Lorelai fell for Luke - the oddly grumpy owner of the local diner who was clearly head over heels in love with her - as the pair eventually found their way into each other's arms. And when it seemed like they were finally ready to tie the knot, the relationship fell apart and Lorelai ended up eloping with Rory's father Christopher in the final season.

While Lorelai always had great chemistry with Christopher, the show made it very clear from the beginning that they wouldn't end up together, simply because she was no longer that girl and he couldn't tie himself down. Thus, while a few brief nights of passion kept things exciting for the pair, they were never endgame - not in that way anyway.

Yet, for some inexplicable reason, the creative team decided to waste Lorelai's long-teased wedding by having the pair (that nobody wanted to see get married) elope off-screen. Not only did this undermine seven years of storytelling, it backed the writers into a corner as, given that the end was nigh, they had to split the pair up quickly and reunite Lorelai with Luke in the final episode.

Thus, the original show came to an end, and fans were robbed of the chance to see the character have the wedding she always dreamed of (with the man she always wanted to marry). Doesn't really make sense now, does it?
