5 TV Couples That Elevated Shows (And 5 That Ruined It)

4. Betty & Jughead - Riverdale

Riverdale Betty Jughead Bughead

The relationship between Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones on The CW's Riverdale quite literally came out of nowhere. One moment, the pair were investigating the murder of Jason Blossom, and the next, the normally reserved Jughead (who didn't get attached to much), placed a passionate kiss on his fellow detective's lips. And that right there might be what makes this relationship so enticing.

In the beginning, it seemed like the writers were going to venture down the typical love triangle route, with Betty facing-off against newcomer Veronica for the affections of Archie Andrews, but upon reflection, it's clear that would have been a bland and predictable storyline that would have offered nothing of value to the show.

Betty and Jughead are easily the show's two most interesting characters so the idea of pairing them together was genius. In a town full of generic caricatures, they are the outsiders, so to speak - the ones that aren't afraid to venture into darker territory to get the answers everyone so desperately craves. Two sides of the same scarred coin, they always have each other's backs and know that their love for each other will guide them through the darkest of discoveries.

Look, we get it, Riverdale isn't the most coherent show in TV history. Heck, it's not even the most coherent show on The CW. But the fact of the matter is that when Jughead and Betty are on-screen together, it's hard to look away.

A luscious silver lining, Bughead remains Riverdale's ace in the hole.
