5 TV Couples That Elevated Shows (And 5 That Ruined It)

4. Blaine & Karofsky - Glee

Glee made a lot of mistakes during its six-year run - mistakes that ultimately made viewers tune out - but the show managed to overcome some of them in its final season - resetting things in a way that didn't necessarily make sense but, at the very least, allowed the writers to take things back to basics.

Of course, given that they planned on revisiting a lot of things that worked in the beginning, they decided to reinvigorate the groundbreaking relationship between Kurt and Blaine (a.k.a. 'Klaine') which had grown stale due to lacklustre writing. And the best way to do that was to split them up.

In theory, this was a perfect idea, as it gave Klaine something to fight for - and putting Blaine in a new relationship gave Kurt an obstacle to overcome. But who did Blaine end up with instead? Was it the formerly-villainous-but-completely-redeemed stud Sebastian Smythe who desperately wanted him in the past? Um, well, no because actor Grant Gustin had moved onto The Flash. Instead, the writers decided to use the other formerly-villainous-but-completely-redeemed guy in Kurt and Blaine's lives - and that was Dave Karofsky.

Not only did this make zero sense, it painted Blaine in a horrific light - as he was introduced back in Season 2 as a means of helping Kurt deal with the bullying he was facing at McKinley High at the hands of (wait for it) Karofsky.

To top it all of, after Dave made amends for all he had done in his younger years, he admitted that he was in love with Kurt... not Blaine. Thus, the decision to inexplicably pair Blaine with the bully of his ex-boyfriend was a really insensitive one that just didn't make sense with who the character was.

If Sebastian had been the original plan, it's a shame they couldn't make it happen. But using Karofsky was a major mistake because even though it was nothing more than a plot device that mostly took place off-screen, it threatened to undermine the very basis of Klaine's iconic relationship.
