5 TV Couples That Elevated Shows (And 5 That Ruined It)

Couples That Ruined Their Show...

5. Hannah & Zach - 13 Reasons Why

13 Reasons Why Zach Hannah

Most of this argument could be attributed to the fact that almost nothing about the second season of 13 Reasons Why made sense, but that didn't stop the creative team from running amok with new material designed to take place during the show's strong debut offering.

How do you keep Hannah Baker involved in a dual-timeline show about her death that already told both sides of her story? Why, you keep her around as a ghost and fill blanks that didn't exist in the flashback narrative, of course!

One of those apparent blanks was Hannah's relationship with Zach Dempsey who, upon realising that he was nothing like his mindless jock buddies, decided that he wanted something real out of a relationship. As a result, he ended up falling for Hannah and the pair embarked on a loving and sexual relationship with each other the summer before her death - only for the pair to end it when the school year commenced and never speak of it again. Why did they never speak of it again? Well, because the writers were constricted by the fact that they were writing around the first season's narrative.

Unlike the next couplings, the frustrating thing here is that Zach and Hannah were actually adorable together (and could very well rival the latter's endearing relationship with Clay Jensen) and that ended up tainting the near-perfect first season.

If they really felt that strongly about each other, why would Hannah have included Zach on her tapes? More than that, why would she have included a reference to the note he crumpled up when he already apologised for that during their summer relationship? There were far too many inconsistencies here, and as a result, it makes it impossible to take the first season at face value.

If anything, this manipulation of the narrative is proof that the show never should have attempted to continue the story when Hannah's arc had been wrapped up.
