5 UK TV Shows Netflix Should Make Next

1. High-Concept Enertainment

Britain’s most successful television exports tend to be classed as “cosy” - think Downtown Abbey, Great British Bake-Off and even Doctor Who to an extent. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing - sometimes you just need the gentler, slower-paced fare to soothe that wicked Sunday evening hangover before you face the real world again on Monday morning.

The Crown is certainly another show in this vein, which makes it all the more like a missed opportunity on Netflix’s part. We can churn out cosy television without the help of foreign streaming services, thank-you very much. What we do need Netflix to do is shake up the British market with a high-concept show of the type that channels in this country simply don’t make. Surely, with the wealth of creative talent this country has to offer, Netflix could back someone to make the UK’s answer to Stranger Things?

While British TV largely plays it safe, the indie film scene continues to flourish in 2016, with titles like Kids In Love and Idris Elba-led A Hundred Streets exhibiting the kind of provocative swagger that we rarely see from our TV offerings. If Netflix were to infuse their creative model with the Brit-indie spirit, we could see something very special indeed.
