5 Ups And 2 Downs From Star Trek: Lower Decks

4. Basing The Premise Of An Entire Episode On One Throwaway Scotty Line

We've been told time and again that Lower Decks is as much a love-letter to Star Trek as it is a continuation of the franchise, and indeed the biggest takeaway from the first episode was that, yes, this show absolutely goes to bed wearing Captain Picard pajamas.

Thus our focus this week is on the day-to-day running of a Starfleet vessel and how everybody manages to sneak 15 minutes in for margaritas while on duty, by simply overestimating the time their tasks will take. This has come up in Star Trek before, but it was in the Next Generation episode 'Relics' that it was really brought to the fore.

In short, never tell your superiors how long a job will actually take to do and a) you'll be able to go at your own pace and b) they'll think you're a miracle worker when you get finished early. Giving Lower Decks an entire episode on this premise is such a nice move.
