5 Ways To Make The Walking Dead Spin-Off Series Work

4. Offer A New Perspective

This ties in with the first suggestion. We now have three seasons of what the zombie apocalypse is like on the smallest scale: A rag-tag group of people who stumble upon each other and make a go of it as a clan of gritty survivors. Don't get me wrong, this approach is classic, relatable, and... well... scary. The thing is, we've been there now. A new perspective could give the audience some insight into the scope of the infection as well as the world. Is it a national issue, like 28 Days Later, or a global epidemic? A short-lived but clever web series approached the genre from the perspective of a para-military group, called the "Dead Patrol", whose whole purpose was to go into major urban areas with nuclear bombs and destroy the cities (thereby eliminating the majority of the threat). It offered a neat twist on the classic zombie apocalypse survival archetype and still allowed for character and story development. Maybe there are a few Government-type people still alive who are focusing on rebuilding on a grander scale. A proven character player like Bruce Davison would be great in that kind of role. Regardless of what the actual story ends up being, giving us a new flavor in their baleful world could provide some much-needed spark for the brand.
