50 Greatest Doctor Who Moments

20. The Cyber Controller Is Unveiled

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9or2yDvC3Ck What's so scary about the Cybermen, is that they're us. We went too far and sucked all the humany-wumanyness out of ourselves in search of the perfect form. That's why 'Nightmare in Silver', as brilliant as it was parading battle-machine Cybermen, isn't quite the Cyberman story. When the Second Doctor faces the Cyber Controller though, it's perhaps scarier than the Cybermen will ever become. The voice is chilling. The mercy lacking. This was lightyears ahead of its time, and in the same way that the Daleks were a comment on what society was twenty years ago, the Cybermen were a comment of what could be twenty years from now. The ultimate cyborgs of sci-fi.

19. Rose Leaves The Doctor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5ispGLdS-I It was to become an icon of the revived series: Rose flying towards the void, the Doctor screaming after her, and then the pair of them crying against walls in alternate realities. And that scene on the beach has gone down as one of the saddest in the history of the show. Murray Gold's 'Doomsday' certainly sets the tone, and when the Doctor never got to finish his sentence, thousands of Whovian hearts broke. It would become the blueprint for NewWho exits.

18. Eleven Introduces the TARDIS to Clara

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrFpjh4KF4U The first moments of a companion discovering the TARDIS for themselves has nearly become cliched: the Doctor even finished Martha's remark of "it's bigger on the inside". But when Victorian Clara first sets foot in the new-look TARDIS, it feels like the show's brand new again. The familiar Eleventh Doctor score plays at a menacing slowness, as he announces, "It's mine." It's a spine-chilling moment, topped only by Clara's comment of it being "smaller on the outside".

17. Six Discovers The Idenity of the Valeyard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2INBe_qZFo Colin Baker was a fiercely theatrical Doctor, as flamboyant as his coat. And when he discovers that the Valeyard is in fact him, it's a moment of over-the-top melodrama. It's a huge reveal, accentuated by Baker's astonishment, as he proceeds to follow the Valeyard, and shout in court about the impossibility of the situation. He's an underrated Doctor, and this was one of his finest moments in the TARDIS.

16. "I'm Clara Oswin. I'm The Impossible Girl. I Was Born To Save The Doctor..."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY2SGCO_ffw 'The Name of the Doctor' was set to be the scariest Doctor Who episode for years. Not because of the villain though: we were all just worried that Moffat would actually reveal his name. The opening scene of the episode is simply one of the most glorious scenes of television this year; there William Hartnell stands, in fantastic technicolor in Gallifrey. Peter Davison's there, Sylvester McCoy, Jon Pertwee in Bessie and even Patrick Troughton running in his fur coat. It was a wonderful surprise, brilliantly scored, and a big chunk of nostalgia to open such a huge episode for the series.
