Leaving aside sexuality, Oberyn and Renly seemed to share a similarly progressive worldview that valued leadership qualities beyond the ability to wield a sword or command an army.

While it's unthinkable that a Baratheon and a Martell would ever be true friends after the sack of King's Landings (although famously spearheaded by Tywin Lannister, let's not forget that it was in the name of a Baratheon king), if they ever found their way past that, they'd find a similarly charismatic presence, capable of appearing carefree and full of life at all times while simultaneously harboring deep and passionate ambitions, for power and revenge respectively.

While Renly wasn't the same caliber of fighter as Oberyn, a scene with the two of them relaxing and breaking down the social conventions of Westeros would have been fun to see, especially given the long and complicated history between their families. Oberyn may have given Renly a different perspective on how to implement the reforms he wanted for his hypothetical reign.

A Renly/Oberyn/Loras menage-a-trios may have been a bit much, but knowing Game of Thrones we likely would have gotten something along those lines had Renly lived long enough to meet Oberyn.
