5. Murphy
Best Quote: Forgive my candour... I just felt my spleen slip out of what used to be my anus This episodes that feature Murphy have all the hallmarks of a classic spy thriller: an underwater base, disguises and a missile threat to name but a few. Archer and the team are called out by at the behest of Cheryl's brother and his fiancée to save their sea laboratory from its deranged leader. Murphy has taken charge of the facility and is threatening to launch nerve-gas missiles over the Eastern Seaboard unless his demands are met. He is very passionate about the sea and environmental issues citing the examples of fishing, whaling and that there is an island of rubbish bigger than the US floating in the ocean. Disguised as a film crew the team manage to infiltrate the lab and foil his plan. Before he is killed beneath a vending machine he is able to redeem himself, but without a quick dig at the incompetence of ISIS. This would be a fairly straightforward character if not played with such charisma by John Hamm. Most of his dialogue had to be recorded over the phone due to work commitments which makes it all the more impressive that he leaves such a lasting impression on the viewers.
