There are several problems with the first couple of episodes of "Wayward Pines", not least the ridiculous pacing and lack of character development. Indeed, everything happens so quickly that it's impossible to fully comprehend just how many layers there are to the mysteries that litter these early episodes. One aspect that DOES stand out, however, is the first appearance in the town of Wayward Pines of Agent Kate Hewson. One of the few early plot-lines that is clear from the beginning is that Ethan woke up in Wayward Pines having been in a car crash-inflicted coma, and that the case he was investigating was that of the missing Kate Hewson. It also emerges fairly quickly that at some point in the very recent past he had been involved in an affair with Kate, who is shown to have very short dark hair in flashbacks. This makes her appearance in Wayward Pines, as unexpected as it is, even more confusing - she has very long auburn hair and seems to have no idea who Ethan is. When she finally begins to speak to Ethan, on the doorstep of her house that she shares with a husband that Ethan has never met before, she introduces many layers of confusion that pique the interest far more than anything revealed so far. She reminds Ethan that they are constantly being watched on CCTV and tells him that he should just settle down and enjoy his time in the town. But most incredibly, she explains that - for her - the year is 2000 (Ethan crashed his car in 2014) and that she has been living there since 1999! While this is initially reminiscent of "Life On Mars", the fact that she recalls her previous life in 2014 suggests that time works very differently in this mysterious town.
