6 Criminally Underrated Monty Python Sketches

1. Lemming of the BDA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMHHWfSe4TE There's a particular fascination to the 'ensemble' Python sketches, as one can see how each of them reacts to one another and how they all bounce off each other. It has to be remembered that before Python, while some of them had acted with others in sketches in other shows, nobody was quite sure how these five performers (Gilliam was mostly a cartoonist at the beginning) were going to mesh on television. Lemming of the BDA is another of those Pythons sketches that starts out with a relatively simple and nice idea - but then in the middle of the sketch, suddenly takes a rather violent left turn and begins to ramp up the tension to 11. Chapman is brilliant as the Blofeld-like Big Cheese and Eric Idle plays the straight-man very well. The constant denials that nothing is going on despite the fact that John Cleese is telling Idle about gelignite mouthwashes whilst being held up just tops off the sketch and is actually something that is easy to miss the first time - showing just how rich Python is.
