6 Hellblazer Storylines Too Weird For Constantine

4. Royal Blood

Another decent addition from Ennis€™s run that introduced us to The Caligula Club, the Vertigo universe€™s premier spot for rich sickos. Royal Blood involves high-ranking rich sicko Sir Peter Marston enlisting Constantine€™s aid after a member of the royal family becomes possessed by a demon. There were some interesting twists along the way as it turned out that the demon, Calibraxis, had been summoned years ago to carry out the crimes of Jack the Ripper. Eventually, it was revealed that Marston was behind the possession, believing that a demon on the throne would reform Britain in ways even Nigel Farage would think excessive. All the while with Calibraxis enjoying a feast at the expense of London€™s innocent, displaying some of the most extreme violence the series has ever shown (which is saying something). Even if you hugely toned down the violence and sexual depravity on display in The Caligula Club, there are still major problems which render Royal Blood unworkable. Firstly it€™s deeply rooted in the British class system in a way that would be difficult to adapt for a US-based television series. Secondly, it concerns a nigh-untouchable institution, the British Royal Family, and having one of them possessed by a demon and committing acts of violence would cause a deluge of controversy that NBC just doesn€™t want.
