6 New TV Shows You Should Be Watching

6. Mom (CBS, Mondays @ 9:30pm)

I find Mom to be one of the funnier shows on CBS. Now that HIMYM is in its final (mildly disappointing, but at least better than its last) season, Mom is set to become one of my new favorites. The show's basic premise is that Christy (Anna Faris) and her mother Bonnie (Allison Janney) are recovering alcoholics trying to repair their relationships with their families and each other. This process hilariously includes Christy's daily use of self-affirmation tapes, and Bonnie therapeutically (and fondly) recounting the "good old times" of her drug use. While some of the jokes can be predictable (the disparity between Bonnie and Christy's recollections of the same events, e.g. "You would snort cocaine out of the rug" vs. "You know, it's not a sin to be thrifty!"), and while the pilot starts out the show a little slowly, the plot picks up quickly with the introduction of some major guest stars. Justin Long makes an appearance as Christy's adorable love interest. Even better is Octavia Spencer as a woman facing jail and an extreme alcohol addiction. Season highlights include an unexpected pregnancy, strawberry lube, an alcoholic relapse, and a Prada handbag. Also keep an eye out for Mimi Kennedy's hilarious supporting role as Christy's surrogate mother/sponsor/cat lady/questionable relationship advisor.
