6 Things Netflix’s Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Remake Must Do

3. Keep It Weird

The original show was completely off the wall. There was a grittiness to it, but it was wrapped up in so many weird and wonderful plot threads that the show became almost of its own genre. Like Twin Peaks, there was nothing that could possibly follow it, and so now it has to follow itself.

It’s highly unlikely this will be a mega hit for Netflix the way Orange Is The New Black was. It simply doesn’t have that wide an appeal. But if Netflix understands that, it’ll do fine. There’s still a massive market for offbeat shows on the platform, as Maniac and Big Mouth show in their own way. Cowboy Bebop must be true to its roots.

Original director Shinichiro Wantabe is back on board, with writing from Chris Yost confirmed too. Yost wrote Thor: Ragnarok, which gives fans a huge reason to be excited, but also wrote Thor: The Dark World, which encourages more caution.

Wanatabe back on board is the biggest victory though. It remains to be seen if the new show can live up to the anime, but with the same director, you can be sure they’ll go about it in the right way.
