6 Things Netflix’s Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Remake Must Do

2. Keep The Spirit, But Redesign

Even prior to the Netflix announcement, Cowboy Bebop was a popular choice for cosplayers. Maybe less so than the likes of Harley Quinn or Jon Snow, but most major conventions would feature the gang at least once. To fans of the show, they’re instantly recognisable. There’s only one problem; they look a bit stupid.

The character designs are brilliant for a cartoon. But one glance at the cosplayers will tell you Spike’s hair was not made for live action. Faye’s costume too is probably in for a redesign. It’s natural that as they cast the gang and start making the perfect look for each actor, the outfits will change slightly.

Remakes rarely please everyone, but one way Netflix can soften the blow of the redesign is by keeping the spirit there.

Spike’s messy but stylish look, Faye’s confidence and Ed’s youthful freedom must still come through in a rework. They face the challenge of having to create new costumes that are different from the ones before yet still keep the same feel. It’s a challenge many Batman movies have faced over the years. And if there’s one thing to be learned from Batman, it’s this: no nipples.
