Although not quite as well-known a series as the others on this list, Fleabag certainly deserves to be talked about in the same breath. The creation of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who adapted her own one-woman stage show into a TV series, the BBC comedy-drama was one of the best new shows of 2016.

The first season, in which Waller-Bridge starred alongside the likes of Hugh Skinner and Olivia Colman, focused on a woman trying to deal with both grief and guilt after a life-changing tragedy.

The series won fans thanks to its sharp wit, searing honesty, and fourth-wall breaking, and Waller-Bridge - who has been busy filming Solo: A Star Wars Story (where she'll be playing a droid) - confirmed at the Edinburgh International Television Festival that the show would return for a second season in 2019.
