7 Major Characters In The Last Kingdom Who Aren't Even Real

5. Hild

We first meet the indomitable Hild near the end of the first season, when Winchester is being sacked by Earl Guthrum and his men. Alfred is forced into hiding and his Uhtred is his least favourite servant. Indeed, he had been fighting for his life against his friend Leofric, who had sworn to execute him.

As Winchester is being ravaged by the Danes, Uhtred, Leofric and Iseult are taking shelter in an attic. They witness Hild, a nun, being dragged into the house below to be sexually assaulted. Iseult, unwilling to let this continue, drops down and kills the man responsible, with the two warriors realising that they have to help as well.

From then, Hild accompanies Uhtred on his mission across Wessex to help Alfred rebuild his army. Hild will be at the battle of Ethandun, then she faithfully follows the Dane north to help King Guthred claim his throne in Northumbria. When he is taken by slavers, it is Hild who lets King Alfred know what has happened to him and she accompanies Ragnar to find him.

Hild goes from a nun to a reluctant fighter to a fully fledged warrior. Eventually, she will lay aside her armour and take up the nun's mantle again, becoming an Abbess. She would remain Uhtred's friend for a long time, but like many of the other characters around his life, she did not exist in reality.
