7 Problems With WandaVision That Nobody Wants To Admit
2. Darcy Lewis Was Underutilised
Darcy Lewis has been a divisive character within the MCU in the past. First appearing in Thor back in 2011, her snarky attitude was off-putting to some fans and she hadn’t been seen at all since Thor: The Dark World some eight years ago. So, when it was announced that she would be joining the show, everyone was curious as to what exactly her role would be.
And while she does start off well, playing a key role in helping S.H.I.E.L.D understand what’s going on inside the Westview anomaly, she ultimately suffers from the same issue as Monica Rambeau. As the series goes on and Wanda comes even further to the forefront, Darcy seems more and more like dead narrative weight.
The show’s penultimate episode sees her acting as just an exposition machine for Vision about the events of Infinity War and Endgame, while the finale has her ram Hayward’s car at the end and then promptly vanish from the plot altogether. Her sudden absence was so abrupt that fans speculated whether COVID-19 had played a role, as WandaVision's production wrapped up mid-pandemic.
However, co-executive producer Mary Livanos told TVLine.com, “I don’t think [Dennings’ absence] had to do with anything COVID-related,”. She further clarified, “We love Darcy as this elusive, wacky character, and I find it particularly delightful that Darcy could pop up anywhere in the universe.”
Elusive or not, there was a real opportunity to delve into Darcy's character in WandaVision that can't help but feel like a missed opportunity.
