3. The Effects Have Aged Poorly, McCoy's Performance Hasn't
Perhaps one of the more difficult elements of classic Doctor Who for younger fans to accept is the incredibly dated effects. Rubber monsters and fluffed lines aside, the effects have an altogether heavier responsibility of selling the drama, danger, and story to the audience. NuWho fans are spoilt in terms of the dazzling effects that are presented week in/week out thanks to the stellar work put in by the current production team. Not only are the effects in NuWho impressive, they continue to get better - that's why the ageing effects of classic Doctor Who can have an alienating effect on modern viewers. Many fans and critics of older episodes of Doctor Who have a tendency to point out the dodgy looking monsters and effects, all the while ignoring some of the terrific performances unfolding on screen. The central performance throughout the McCoy years was, of course, that of Sylvester McCoy himself and he regularly gave his all in order to help continue the show he was so clearly emotionally invested in.
