7 Reasons To Watch The Strain On FX

3. A Blend Of Differing Styles Of Cinematography

As far as the look and production of the series, del Toro has said they want to give the show a very realistic documentary feel. This along with the "He is Here" viral teaser that was released seem to indicate the show will take a found footage approach. The found footage style of horror is very polarizing. There's a large section of the audience that finds the method extremely played out, while there's obviously those who will rush out to see the every new shakily-filmed flick. The approach does tend to work best with horror, and when done right can still elicit some great scares. However del Toro also said they want the show to evolve into a more stylish, horror feel that requires more suspense and atmosphere-driven moments. So from these statements it sounds like The Strain will be a mix of documentary-style found footage and traditional horror full of creepy settings and jump scares. Combining the two styles of shooting isn't something usually seen in television or movies, and if utilized correctly is a unique approach that may work very well for the subject matter and make the show stand out from its competitors.
