7 Reasons Why You Need To Revisit Californication
1. David Duchovny
If nothing
else mentioned on this list gets you ready for a Californication binge, then
singling out David Duchovny should really tip the scales.
Best known for his role as Fox Mulder in The X-Files franchise, Duchovny completely went against the grain with his role as Hank Moody. But, boy, does it pay off.
At once hilarious, charming, smarmy and selfish, Duchovny’s performance as the author is one of TV’s best ever pieces of acting, and most of the show’s success lies on his shoulders because of it.
Despite all the terrible things he does, all the people he hurts and all the lives he ruins, Hank remains a completely understandable, likeable and redeemable character in Duchovny’s capable hands, a man who is easy to hate in the moment, but in the long run is just too endearing to stay mad at.
Much like Will Arnett’s voice work in Bojack Horseman, Duchovny makes the entire show his own and miraculous succeeds where a lesser actor would have been doomed to fail; he makes Hank a complex, flawed hero, but makes the audience root for him right until the final scene.
