7 Reasons You Should Watch Mr. Robot Right Now

1. It Doesn't Romanticise Mental Illness

Pop-culture and society in general has sometimes been guilty of romanticising mental illness because it can seem mysterious, interesting, intense, and say it quietly, sexy. Sure, why not? Depressed people are probably all really intelligent and read Nietzche, don't they? As if they have life all figured out? Just look at how many people think they wish they had a relationship like The Joker and Harley Quinn, despite the fact that it's an abusive example of Stockholm Syndrome at the best of times. This misconception that mental illness can be a gift can be referred to as 'The Van Gogh Effect'. Take a moment and think about how cool it would be if you cut your own ear off. Oh yeah, there's nothing cool about it.

Mr. Robot, thankfully, never even comes close to being guilty of this. Seeing Elliot in a perpetual state of crippling anxiety and abysmal loneliness, to the point that he can't stand the touch of another person and spends nights cosying up in the corner of his one-bedroom apartment to cry himself to sleep, drives the most important lesson of mental illness home - it sucks big time (which is an understatement).

Maybe you've had your own battles with mental illness, or someone close to you has, or perhaps you're simply curious about it. Whatever motivates your interest, if you want to see a realistic, interesting, honest, and raw exploration of mental illness, then look no further than Mr. Robot.
