Many of the early plaudits afforded to the Netflix series were a result of their villains, with one (who we’ll come to later) standing out as perhaps the best Marvel antagonist ever seen on screen. The MCU has often been criticised for the poor quality of its adversaries (from Malekith to Kaecilius to Yellowjacket, the list of forgettable foes is sizable), but that same criticism could not be levied to their televisual counterparts, at least at first.

David Tennant’s Kilgrave haunts the entirety of Jessica Jones’ first season. A terrifying presence given the mind control abilities that he has no qualms about misusing, he is deep and seemingly unstoppable, a far cry from Tennant’s lovable and most notable role as the Tenth Doctor.

Mahershala Ali’s Cornell ‘Cottonmouth’ Stokes only lasts for half of the first season of Luke Cage, being shockingly killed off and replaced by the far less memorable Willis ‘Diamondback’ Stryker, but he excels as the gangster muscling in on Harlem behind the scenes.

Bar the occasional flash of brilliance from the likes of Mariah Dillard or Bullseye, the villains dropped off considerably from Iron Fist onwards, but two of the originals well and truly made their mark and should be fondly remembered for it.
