7. The Giant - The Iron Giant
Heroic sacrifice obviously has its place in film history, but it's impossible to transmit as much to a child, who will merely see a functional, symbolic gesture as the demise of a beloved character for no reason other than to make them cry. When the Giant has his Superman moment, it's the inevitable end to his arc, and while his death might not exactly be permanent, it is still completely devastating to see the un-recognised good guy heroically embrace his death for the greater good - like John Coffey in The Green Mile. The emotion of the scene is played wonderfully, and as a result, it is still his death that defines the movie, and not necessarily the kicker at the end when he reawakens.
