7 Tragic Animated Deaths You'll (Probably) Never Recover From

6. Kocoum - Pocahontas

Kocoum Kocoum met a grisly end in a plot that almost led to all-out war between the settlers and the Powhatans in the 1995 Disney animated film Pocahontas. Kocoum is a Native American warrior and intended future husband of Pocahontas, titular star of the film, and wins viewers over with his bravery in battle and affection toward his bride-to-be, even if it is displayed in an unorthodox manner, with the soon-to-be Powhatan Chief being depicted as cold and distant at times. In a deleted scene from the film, Kocoum is seen to have a vastly different personality than the one that he would get in the final version of Pocahontas, speaking more kindly to his future bride and also smiling more, characteristics which may have made his demise more saddening had they not been left on the cutting room floor. Yet that doesn€™t make his untimely death any less tragic. After spying Pocahontas kissing John Smith, the warrior is consumed by jealousy and attacks John as a dramatic fight ensues before Thomas, a fellow settler, guns Kocoum down. The manner of his demise €“ grabbing for Pocahontas€™ necklace and breaking it as he falls lifeless into the water, is symbolic of Pocahontas being released from a relationship she never wanted to be in, which was stirring stuff.
