Ever since Netflix successfully revived Arrested Development, after being off the air since 2004, Browncoats have been speculating that the streaming company could exert the same Lazarus-like influence on Firefly. The main argument cited against the idea of this happening is the gulf in production costs between making an episode of a contemporary half-hour comedy show like Arrested Development, and an effects heavy sci-fi production like Firefly. Firefly and Serenity are popular mainstays on Netflix and have without doubt helped sustain a growing audience of devotees to the show. Nevertheless the potential for Netflix being the saviour was dealt a significant blow in May 2013 when executive Ted Sarandos denied resurrecting Firefly was part of their plans:
Arrested Development was the rarest of birds in that the audience of the show grew larger than the original broadcast audience because people came to discover it years after it was cancelled. The Firefly fan is still the Firefly fan from when it was on TV and theres fewer of them and theyre more passionate every year. Whereas with Arrested Development were going to be serving a multiple of the original audience. Any of the other shows we could bring back would be a fraction of the original audience.
Given the mistreatment of Firefly on its release it is a contentious issue as to whether Firefly's fanbase is lesser now than when it first aired. Regardless though Sarandos's comments would appear to put an end to such speculation for the time being. Thinking positively, what the comments do indicate is that Firefly is in the thoughts to some degree of those that hold the Netflix purse strings. The significance of this cant be overlooked when the show in question only ran for 14 episodes and was cancelled in the early 2000's.
As well as the odd article, I apply my "special mind" to scriptwriting for Comics, Films and Games... Oh and I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wild flow'rs, I put on women's clothing, and hang around in bars.
