8 Actors Who Regretted Leaving Doctor Who

3. Christopher Eccleston

We've all heard the stories about how Christopher Eccleston felt drained after working on Doctor Who, and it feels fair to say that, overall, the production of his sole series was a negative experience for him. But even in spite of this, there were still elements of positivity to be found.

Eccleston loved playing the Ninth Doctor, something he recently reiterated when it was announced that he'd be returning to the role for Big Finish. He found joy in this character, and despite certain other factors leading to a poor time on set, he actually came to regret the fact that he didn't get a second series.

In 2016, he said that it was "tragic" that he didn't get to do more with the role, and that he harbours some regrets about the early end of his tenure, because he believes that his performance would've only improved if he'd continued for a second series.

Instead, David Tennant was cast as the Tenth Doctor and he ended up being fantastic, but it does sting a little that we missed out on a bit more onscreen Eccleston. Let's hope that his upcoming audio adventures knock it out of the park.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
