6. Clash Of The Tritons (Air Date: January 11th 2005)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJqZkqecnTw Clash of the Tritons is everything that made Veronica Mars great. When Veronica is framed as the one selling fake I.D.s, it leads her to a stand-alone investigation of a secret society within Neptune High, known as The Tritons- the ones who set her up. Hidden behind anonymity and using cloak and dagger tactics, the Tritons attempt to manipulate the circumstances around Veronica the entire episode, essentially running a smear job on her to discredit anything she might find. This culminates in the scene I've linked above, the now famous karaoke scene in which Kristen Bell herself performed Blondie's 'One Way Or Another'. Veronica Mars was loved by its fans for finding ways to turn ordinary storylines into extraordinary moments, such as the lead actress singing karaoke, as a means of turning one of the Tritons' own schemes squarely back upon itself. It's this combination of charismatic defiance and crippling oppression that inspired fans to root for Veronica during her high spots; the very real emotional torment she fought from Lilly's death and being the target of so much bile acting as the sobering anchor to her story. Whilst Veronica provided the high spots for this episode, the rest of it made use of some textbook writing to advance our exploration into our supporting cast- Logan, Weevil specifically- as they are faced with mandatory counseling regarding Lilly's death. Both of them bitter enemies, whom happened to have a common interest in Amanda Seyfried's feisty and spirited Lilly Kane, this episode drops some subtle clues as to exactly what went down in the lead up to Lilly's death- a staple of the slow-burning, very effective season arc storyline into her death.
